These were really popular last year, when we held them with no advertising on a couple of days, so this year we’re plugging for all we’re worth!

We like things done properly at the Cafe in Langsett, so no soggy carvery spuds sitting under lights for 2 hours, no dried up turkey, and certainly no overcooked limp sprouts. We ‘re serving up at 2pm, so everythings fresh and crisp as if your granny had cooked it herself!

Have you exhausted all the options? Just at the right moment to amuse the kids for the final few weeks of school holiday, we have devised a short nature trail through the woods at Langsett.

So get yourselves and the family over to Langsett and go and see what you can find! The pond is teaming with life, the woods are alive with birdsong, and the heathers in full flower. Download a PDF below or pop in to the Cafe and pick up a free copy.

Once you’ve finished why not stop by the cafe for a drink and a treat. We’ve got pens and paper waiting here for the children to do some colouring. We’ll be sticking pictures on our display through the summer with prizes for the best ones!

Download it here: nature trail

We went for a walk with the kids at the weekend. Joe and Rosie loved collecting leaves and they almost found all on the list. Now, we were with Poppy in the pram and went a slightly different way so I have devised a pushchair friendly route which takes the upper path , and I even found some different things to look for !

Download it here : nature trail pushchair

Have fun, and don’t forget to pop into the cafe to see us

Distance- 3 1/2 miles: A moderate walk through the woods of Langsett and up onto the moors for some stunning views across the Little Porter valley

Start and Finish at Langsett Barn Car Park (A616) OS SE210 004

Descend through the gate by the picnic tables to quickly gain the shoreline of the Reservoir, follow the shoreline for 1 mile easy walking through the woods, with some lovely mixed larch and oak woodlands.

The Path brings you out onto a cobbled track, turning right here will lead you back to the carpark along the top of the bank, for an easy 2 mile circuit (just) passable with pushchairs, but our way lies to the left down the steep cobbled lane to Brookhouse Bridge, finished in 1904 and close to the site of Brook House farm.

Here the Little Don ( or Porter) river flows into the reservoir and there is a lovely grassy area ideal for a picnic or a quick dip of the feet.

Through the gate and onto the hill, with heather for company now. Up the steep lane and out onto the moors. 1/2 a mile on and you come to a junction, Straight on here takes you up Mickleden Edge and over the Cut Gate track to Howden Reservoir. But turn left and follow the track downhill past the shelled out remains of North America farm ( destroyed by tank target training during WWII ) and onto a rough road, which brings you back to the waters edge at Thickwoods Brook.

Follow the made up track for a few hundred metres then take the footpath on your left back into the woods. This is a lovely stretch of recently opened woodland that takes the shoreline back towards the dam wall before rising to join the path from Upper Midhope. Turn left on the path for a short distance to join the road over the dam wall. At the far side of the wall, continue on the road for 20m to find our cafe where you can rest your feet and enjoy a fine cream tea before heading up the road back to the carpark.

Check out this link to a really thorough discription of the walk ( done the other way round)
